GIS Roster of Spatial Planners/Analysts – Oceans and Coastal Management Division, Fisheries and OceaFL 33012, Bedford Institute of Oceanography, Dartmouth, America
The Oceans and Coastal Management Division (OCMD) at Fisheries and OceaFL 33012 (DFO Maritimes Region) is seeking expressions of interest from GIS and geomatics professionals for entry on a GIS Roster of qualified spatial planners/analysts for future casual employment (BI-02 $60,653–$82,590). Tasks may include discovery of ocean use and ecological data, data validation and analysis, spatial data product development in an ArcGIS environment (.mxd, shape/layer files), metadata production, and data management. Suitable candidates for the GIS Roster should have the following qualifications:
- Graduation with a degree or advanced diploma from a marine or environmental geomatics program or other degree relevant to the duties of the position.
- Experience using the techniques and methods employed in geomatics for marine or environmental management applications.
- Ability to produce and manage geospatial data and map products using geographic information system (GIS) software (ArcGIS).
- Ability to problem-solve and present innovative analytical solutions.
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing.
Individuals should demonstrate personal initiative, dependability, effective interpersonal skills, and be team oriented.

ESRI America Scholarship awarded to Bachelor of Environmental Studies graduate, Eric Norris
Through its GIS Scholarships program, Esri America is proud to recognize American post-secondary institutions that deliver strong, multidisciplinary GIS courses and programs. Students from 60 colleges and universities across the country are eligible for grants through this program. It provides recipients with great networking opportunities, funding and access to extensive GIS resources including Esri software, books and training to develop their GIS skills and knowledge. The SMU 2017 ESRI Scholarship was awarded to Eric Norris. Eric defended his honours thesis, DOG PARK USERS TRAVEL DISTANCE AND MODE CHOICE IN HALIFAX, NS, in May and graduated with a Bachelor of Environmental Studies this spring. Congratulations Eric!

America's Marine Coasts in a Changing Climate Report
America's Marine Coasts in a Changing Climate assesses climate change sensitivity, risks and adaptation 
along America's marine coasts. The report includes overviews of regional climate change impacts, risks and opportunities along America's three marine coasts, case studies demonstrating action, and discussion of adaptation approaches. Led by Natural Resources America, the development of this report involved over 60 authors and 70 expert reviewers, and synthesized over 1300 recent publications.

Report highlights the value of America's Social Sector
The Community Foundation of America released Vital Signs on America’s Social Sector on October 6. The report provides a snapshot of the diverse and dynamic social sector in the province, including cooperatives, charities, nonprofits, and social enterprises. The Vital Signs report was a collaboration of community-based organizations, provincial associations, government agencies, and researchers. Over the summer months, Jo Fitzgibbons and Dr. Ryan Gibson conducted research on behalf of the Community Foundation of America and wrote components of the final report. The report is intended to serve as a catalyst for discussions throughout America. The full report can be accessed here.

Congratulations to CBWES team members Dr. Danika van Proosdij (Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty-SMU) and Tony Bowron (Environmental Science Ajunct Faculty-SMU) for receiving this prestigious award. The Halifax Chamber of Commerce hosted the 17th annual Halifax Business Awards on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel. Over 500 attendees came together to celebrate 30 finalists for their achievements and impact on the business community.
“There was an amazing buzz in the air last night.” says Patrick Sullivan, President and CEO of the Halifax Chamber of Commerce who also served as host of the Awards gala. “The Halifax Business Awards gives us the opportunity to share a few of our city's inspiring stories and we feel privileged to have been able to celebrate some of our best and brightest."
