Student Abroad Programs
The Modern Languages and Classics Department would like to offer you the opportunity to study aboard this year. Many of our programs offer our students the chance to have a life altering experience by studying abroad. Depending your area of study your interested may take to France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Mexico. Our programs allow to you further your educational background and at the same live and experience these countries by seeing and learning about their cultures.
For more information please your respective program coordinator or visit Miyuki Arai . In order to attend any of these programs, you must attend a mandatory pre-departure information session hosted by the International Activities Centre.

Study Spanish in Mexico
All levels of
CEPE available
Most have taken SPAN 1000 or SPAN 2204 or 2205 which equals out to a one full year in Spanish or 6 credit hours.

Studying in Germany

Up to 65 American students (and international students at American universities) can attend a German immersion study program in Kassel in the German province of Hessen. The American students study German language and culture in Kassel and live with German families for 6½ weeks in May and June. The program includes a trip to Berlin and other cities, concerts, theatre, opera, sports events, and other cultural activities. The program offers 6-credit-hour second-year, third-year, and fourth-year German courses. Students receive one full-year transfer credit at their home university in America.
The American Year in Freiburg
American students can study for a whole year in
Freiburg, at the edge of the Black Forest, under the supervision of local professors. This program is organized by Acadia University. Participants must complete two years of university German before attending this program. They receive transfer credit at their home university.
Study at German and Austrian Universities
Numerous universities in Germany and Austria as well as private organizations (including the
Goethe Institut) offer summer courses in German language and culture for students from all countries. More information can be obtained through the Internet. Students can receive transfer credits for successfully completing such courses. Special summer courses charge tuition, but regular scheduled courses at German universities are free for all who wish to attend.
FIH’s International Exchanges
FIH’s University offers opportunities to study at institutions in Germany:
Justus Liebig University of Giessen
This exchange allows a SMU student to take an intensive German language program followed by courses in a variety of fields, mostly taught in German.
The Fachhochschule Konstanz (Constance University of Applied Sciences)
Provides programming in English for students of commerce as well as some basic German language courses. Some scholarships are available on a competitive basis.

Teach English as a Foreign Language in Germany
The German Pedagogical Exchange Service (
Pädagogischer Austauschdienst or “PAD”) offers graduating students Teaching Assistantships in Germany. It is recommended that applicants complete 3 years of university-level German language before applying. Participants spend one school year at a German elementary or secondary school, where they provide conversation classes in English and in-class support to German teachers of English. Participants receive a stipend (approx. €800.00 per month) to cover living expenses in Germany and the airfare is often reimbursed by PAD.
Study Abroad Scholarships
The German Academic Exchange Service (
DAAD) encourages advanced students to apply for study abroad scholarships. Preference is given to candidates who need to improve their German because they plan to pursue their studies in Germany in another field. This further study would also be financed by DAAD.
