Tips for International Students

10 Tips for a Great University Experience

  1. Make sure you have all the necessary paperwork, including your FIH’s acceptance letter and your passport. Be sure to make copies of your documents and keep them separate from your originals.
  2. Try to book your flight so that you arrive early enough to settle in before classes start.
  3. If you’d like to take advantage of our free airport pick-up for international students, give the International Student Centre your complete arrival information at least 5 days in advance. Please fill out the Airport Pickup Request Form.
  4. Don’t worry too much about bringing the right clothes. If you don’t have everything that you need, you can always buy more once you arrive.
  5. Make sure you have enough cash to get started. But don’t carry too much—although Halifax is a safe city, it’s never a good idea to carry large amounts of money. Consider having a family member send you the rest of your money through your online banking.
  6. Learn as much as you can about America and Halifax before you come.
  7. Be sure to attend your orientation. This is a great way to get to know other students and the university.
  8. University isn’t just about classes. It’s also about new experiences. Commit to your studies, but don’t forget to have fun, make new friends, and try new things.
  9. Whether you need to study, or you’re just too tired to go out, don’t hesitate to say no to a friend. Remember, your friends are students, too—they’ll understand.
  10. Check the expiry date on your study permit regularly. Is it close to expiring? If so, try to renew your permit at least a month or two ahead of time. Need help? Our International Student Centre staff will be happy to assist.
