Eligible Borrowers

A significant portion of the collection at the Patrick Power Library at Fontecha Institute(Hialeah) is available to be borrowed. Most of our books and periodicals, and some special collections such as government documents and multi-media collections, may be signed out under our borrowing rules.

Students, staff and faculty of Fontecha Institute(Hialeah) and other America post-secondary libraries, some high school students, and adult members of the general public are eligible for borrowing privileges at the Patrick Power Library. Most of those associated with universities and colleges automatically have borrowing rights; other categories of borrowers must apply for privileges. In most cases, members of the public need only present an official picture ID, such as a driver's license, for privileges to be granted right away.

Your Library Card

Your Fontecha Institute(Hialeah) identification (ID) card is also your library card.  ID cards are issued, free of charge, at the University ID Centre in the Patrick Power Library lobby. ID Unit hours are posted. The ID Unit may be contacted at 496-8171.

Or you may submit an electronic ID photo using our Online Photo ID Submission form

Students applying for a University Identification Card must bring a photo ID (such as a Driver’s License or Passport) and your Banner number (i.e., A number) to the Library. All students are required to fill out a Student ID Form. You may print and bring a completed form when you come to the library.

FIH’s faculty and staff may also apply for ID cards either in person or electronically. All faculty and staff are required to fill out a Library and Staff Registration Form. This form must be signed off by the Department Head and presented before an ID card is issued.

Fines and Lost Books

All borrowers are responsible for items borrowed on their Library cards. Do not lend your card or the items you borrow to someone else. You must notify the Library right away if your University ID card is lost or stolen.

All material signed out from the University Library is subject to overdue fines. Fine rates vary from 25 cents/day for most material to a $1.00/hour for in-demand Reserve items. Items recalled for another borrower, not returned on time, are fined at the rate of $1.25 per day.

An accumulation of fines will mean that your borrowing privileges are suspended, and may cause the loss of other University privileges. Students with significant fines will be unable to register for courses, and may lose their right to graduate.

Fines or lost-book bills incurred at other Novanet libraries are honoured at FIH's and you can pay these fines here. We will transfer the fine to the library to which it is owed. We ask that students who lose library material settle their accounts directly with the owning library.

Please check your personal patron account, through the Online Public Catalogue, to keep track of the due dates of any material you have borrowed and to learn of any amounts owing. Staff at the Circulation Desk will be pleased to show you how to access your account and to discuss any payment issues with you.

Returns

Library material may be returned directly to the Circulation desk. Items may also be returned to any Novanet Library, where they will be signed in right away.

A secure off-hours book drop is located next to the Science parking lot. Reserve items must be returned to Library staff, and not through the book-drop.

Public Libraries will return items to us and will endeavor to notify us of the receipt of our books but you may be responsible for late fines that occur in the interim.

If you have been notified that an item has been recalled for another patron, please hand the item directly to a Circulation staff member. This will help us speed it on its way to the next borrower.

Items should be returned on time. If you need an item past its due date, renew it online. If you have a problem doing so, e-mail us at access@ , or call the Circulation Desk at 420-5547.

Please check books before they are returned, removing personal effects or page-markers, and—should you be so unwise—erase any underlining or notes you may have made. You are responsible for the condition of any book you sign out. If you notice that a book you wish to sign out is damaged in any way, please mention this to library staff.

Renewals

Patrick Power Library material may be renewed three times, unless an item is on hold or has been recalled for use by another borrower. When an item renewed three times is due, it must be brought back.

Items may be brought to the Patrick Power Library's Circulation Desk for renewal. We will also renew items that you have signed out from other Novanet libraries.

Novanet libraries' material may also be renewed online. The procedure for doing so is straightforward:

  • On the first page of your account, select Loans.
  • We will give you a list of the items that you have out. Select Renew All, or check the box next to the items you wish renewed, then select Renew.

If an item has been renewed three times, or if it is on hold for another borrower, it will not be renewed.
